My dad has a celtic band called Failte (pronounced "fal-cha"). For their 3rd CD,
called "Kitchen Party "Session", they wanted to record it live, so they
rented out a small theatre and put on a small show for the public. My dad asked me to record
it live, so we hooked up a DAT machine to the mixing board to record it.
The show started off great but by the fourth or fifth song I noticed that the guitar player's pickup was
cutting in and out. If you listen carefully you can here it starting in "Wild Moutain Thyme".
I started to panic when I realized that he had a solo piece, "Long Black Veil", coming up where
he was going to sing and play the guitar. After some quick thinking I remembered that we had a
condenser mic on the stage that we were using for back-up vocals and I knew that the guitar
player was going to use it to sing. So I decided to turn the guitar pickup track all the way
down and hope that the condenser mic would pick up both his singing and the guitar while still
providing a good balance. Thankfully it worked out perfectly and ended up being one of the
best tracks on the CD. I was quite proud of the way it turned out.
