Description:
This example is the result of a unique opportunity that was presented to me to work
on a group project for the Canandian Embassy in Beijing, China. At the beginning
of the first semester of the Rich Media Post Graduate Program, I was asked to be
part of this project by a fellow class mate, Sarah Wong, along with two other classmates,
Justin Soni and
Thomas Borzecki.
The purpose of this project was to rebrand Canada as a technological
leader instead of just a nice, friendly country. We chose to focus on the important
technologies that have been invented in Canada or by Canadians throughout the
country's history like the telephone, artificial pacemaker, the Avro Arrow and the
Blackberry. We used a scrollable timeline interface to present this information.
For some of the items in the timeline, there is a "More Info" or "More Video"
button that the user can click to read additional information or view a short
video. An intro at the beginning of the application explains to the user how
to navigate through the project.
There is also a second version of the project that presents all
the information as a linear, non-interactive slideshow that can be played with
or without audio. It automatically cycles through each item in the timeline
in a continuous loop.
We are going to be incorporating a PHP/database backend that will control all
the content, images and videos. New items can added and current items can be
deleted and updated at any time and the application will reflect this changes.
When the application is loaded, it will build itself based on how much content
is in the database at that moment.
I was personally responsible for developing the entire slideshow
version of the application as well as a number of elements in the interactive
version. These include the intro video and animation, the "More Info" and
"More Video" buttons and their pop-up windows and the final, minor interface
elements and troubleshooting. Thomas Borzecki was responsible for developing
the timeline scrolling interface as well as a few parts of the design. Sarah
and Justin were responsible for the content and overall design of the project.
This project is one of the most labour-intensive and polished
applications that I've been involved with producing. It also had the most
pressure behind it because we were creating something for a pretty big
client and the project was going to be on display on an international stage.
